Aviation people knows that aviation industry is very strict. Highly regulated. There are multiple level controls. Every individual has responsibilities. Everyone is an observer and inspector. All these efforts are for the safety, efficiency and continuity of the industry.
An industry that still remains fragile despite such precautions. The Coronavirus pandemic we are currently experiencing reminded us once more of this.
Struggling with pilot strikes, complaining from low cost competition and surprised by very young super jumbo scraps, the industry now took a punch right in the middle of its stomach from a completely different angle. It’s breathless, black-out, and surprised at what happened. Perhaps the hardest blow it’s ever eaten. The pain is still fresh and busy with regulating its breath.
All the controversy, discussions and plans before the punch took place became trivial. There are completely different problems now. Moreover, these problems are not only aviation problems.
Complaints about the rush of life were at a high level. Life has slowed down. Covid-19 opened a brand new page in this sense. It created an opportunity for what we always wanted to do. The negative impact of civilization on nature was proved by the cleaned air and water. Many topics of discussion have become clear. It has carried out the most comprehensive inspection of the whole world. It put our flaws in front of us. It showed that even an industry like aviation could succumb to a microscopic intruder.
Nothing is taken for granted. Appreciating what we have, or fight for more? It is not possible to give up both, but it is time to reconsider the balance. It is the widest wake-up call. Like any previous crisis, this will pass too. But we will “have to be” more sensitive societies.
